Repertoire
Throughout the show numerous children’s songs are interwoven into the musical fabric, engaging the audience to seek out songs they know and recognize. Once this starts, the audience anticipates every moment, “feeling smart” as they pick out all of the songs they know, some of which are carefully hidden in the musical score. “Children at Play” combines familiar nursery rhymes and children’s songs with upbeat and happy music to depict the energy and fun of children playing. Songs include “Farmer in the Dell”, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”, and “Rain, Rain Go Away” in which a low brass soloist is prominently featured. “Hopscotch” contains sound effects and repetitive musical figures. “Mary Had a Little Lamb” emerges strongly here. The ballad of “Flying Kites” features breezy, lyrical music to depict a lazy day, perfect for flying kites. The grand finale, “Young at Heart,” brings back the high energy of the opening production and features the drum section, allowing the band to play some children’s games. “Three Blind Mice” and “Twinkle” are two of the songs included as the show leads to a recap of the opening and cheerful finale.
