Show Title
Her Majesty
Repertoire
For their fourth program, The Sages present "HER MAJESTY," a regal show that pays tribute to history's greatest queens.
The show begins with Percy Grainger's arrangement of "Prelude in the Dorian Mode," a dark piece that evokes castles, thrones, and medieval textures. The opener rapidly transitions to a much lighter and less serious scherzo movement featuring the music of Pat Metheny blended with the renaissance sounds of Michael Gandolfi's "Flourishes and Meditations."
At the conclusion of the second movement, the corps begins a uniform change, dropping their red jackets and royal pretenses as they play "Guinevere," a tribute to that legendary queen who sacrificed everything for true love. The ballad reminds us that being queen, a woman in power, is often difficult -- and sometimes impossible.
But optimism returns in the closer. The corps returns to a rigid and militaristic texture with the "Fanfare and National Anthem," an epic and awe-inspiring brass piece arranged for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. As the show races to its end, the corps adds a little fantasy with "The Lighting of the Beacons," a triumphant piece that the audience might recognize from The Lord of the Rings.
The final moments of the show drive home the majesty and grace of the greatest queens of history -- and legend: Mary, Elizabeth, Victoria, Catherine, Isabella, Guinevere, and many, many more.
