Established in 1949, the Brooklyn Guard (historically known as the Guard of Carroll Gardens) has served the greater community of New York City through music and volunteerism for nearly seven decades. The Guard of Carroll Gardens, a senior drum corps, was established by local veterans, police officers, and firefighters to perform in parades, memorial services, and exhibition competitions. They traveled across NYC, Long Island, and Northern New Jersey under the sponsorship of the South Congregational Church in Carroll Gardens. In 1963, sponsorship was unfortunately terminated due to financial constraints, and the assets of the corps were adopted by many southern Brooklyn high schools who then collectively established the Brooklyn Guard Drum and Bugle Corps, a junior drum corps. The Brooklyn Guard still features custom G bugles handmade in the heart of Brooklyn and seeks excellence in character through the corps motto, “Honor, Homage, and Humility.”
