Intro - “First Snow”
Ice Dance - Danny Elfman
Represents the first snow, the ice-sickles just starting to sprout from tree branches and gutters. That innocent, fragile feeling that describes the beginning of winter.
Mvt. I - “Festivities”
Across the Halfpipe by Samuel Hazo. Children ice-skating over frozen rivers, coats, hats, mittens, and scarves. Chimney’s letting lose smoke from a warm, snow-covered home. Powdered snow fills the air as sleds speed by. A contra solo recreates the image of fun and excitement.
Mvt. II - “Barren”
Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap. The Ballad depicts the emptiness of a winter night. The dark and cold expanse is chilling.
Mvt. IV - “The Melt”
As Summer Was Just Beginning by Larry Daehn. The ice may melt, the fun may seem to fade, but there’s always the promise of snow next year, and the hint of Spring and new possibilities around the corner.
