FMA Live NEWS July 7th Update

We have officially kicked off the season of FMA Live Season 1!

The Corps were split amongst 3 Regions to start off the competitive season: Eastern, Pacific and Southern Tours

The Eastern Tour started in Detroit at Ford Field. The Knights came back from years of hibernation strong, winning Guard, Percussion and Visual. Indiana Royals came out strong as well in Brass, barely edging out Black Gold and taking overall Music! Castells took overall GE, barely ahead of Continuum and Black Gold.

Scores: 6th 75.8 Indiana Royals; 5th 76.65 Black Gold; 4th 77.25 Continuum; 3rd 77.85 The Knights; 2nd 77.9 Castells and 1st 78 Unspecified

Notes: This show had the strongest out of the gate group of corps taking the top 4 scores of the night across all shows. Unspecified won by being the most even corps of the night, being high in Visual and Music, while being just .3 behind in GE. Castells were strong in GE, but fell behind a bit in overall music particularly Brass and Music Analysis. Most corps, including the Knights who won overall visual, struggled in visual analysis. While Indiana Royals were very strong in Music, they were last in Visual and GE.

In the Pacific Tour, Stanford Stadium welcomed 5 corps to the tour! Nastalgia returned to the field taking high Guard, Dark Knights nearly swept the music categories taking Brass, Percussion and overall music! Kanpeki-sa took both the visual category and overall GE in an extremely strong showing!

Notes: Once again the winner, Kanpeki-sa was likely the most balanced of the night, being high in GE and Visual, but last in overall music, having the lowest Percussion score of the night. Nastalgia nearly caught them, tied in GE, but had a low Visual Analysis score that kept them just short. The shocker of the night may have been Dark Knights who took Brass, Percussion and Music, but barely made 4th place. I am sure they will look to boost GE scores as the season moves on. Steelmen are positioned well for movement as they also have a very balanced show, tied in GE, 3rd in Visual and Music.

Lastly on the tour was Baton Rouge from Tiger Stadium. Gulf Knights visually looked incredible taking both Guard and overall Visual as well as a balanced music captions allowing them to take Music overall. Brass went to Spirit of the Raiders and Percussion went to Queen Mutha of FDCI fame! Heart of Palm Beach took GE all to themselves.

Notes: Gulf Knights could be a real darkhorse of the season, as they took both visual and music while being tied for second in GE. At least in the southern tour, they are strong. Great to have Queen Mutha back and right now their weakness is visual analysis, no doubt they will be working hard on that. Heart of Palm Beach had a great GE score, but struggled with guard and music analysis.

Notes: The Gulf Knights continued a strong showing, keeping 1st place along with Guard and Visual and improving their score by .8. Queen Mutha really improved by over 1.2 while not actually taking a single category. However it was Spirit of the Raiders who had the biggest leap after a somewhat surprising show Saturday. Increasing by 1.6 they took 4 captions in the process and came close to an upset!

Notes: Kanpeki-sa held strong and increased their scores in GE and visual, having the strongest performance of the night. Steelmen had a HUGE jump over night as they clearly were saving some for the big day! They did so taking just one caption of percussion, but falling just short of Kanpeki-sa. Nostalgia also held strong and increased their scores taking both guard and music.

FMA LIVE Update July 14th

We had an interesting week that started with a mix of results dramatically shifting things from where we left off last week. Now we turn to the big events of the week from Louisville, Denver and Jackson with corps finishing up their regional shows before making their way to Texas this week and on to SanAntonio next weekend!

First the results from Louisville. The Eastern group of corps came together one last time to go head to head. What started off as the dominant group in the activity dropped some last weekend, but had some real success this week. Now for the results from Sunday's big show!

Notes: The Knights (who were #2 going into the show) won by being just .3 behind in GE and winning Visual by almost the same margin while being a close second in music. The tie for 2nd was a battle! Castells (#4 going in) edged out Unspecified in GE by .3 and .2 in Visual, but it was Unspecified that came back strong in Music, even with Castells taking Percussion! These 2 will continue to battle through the week in Texas

Now we move to Jackson where Spirit of the Raiders barely made the show after mistakenly heading to Jackson MICHIGAN after a typo from the home office! We apologized for the error and paid for the group's gas. The #3 national corps, Gulf Knights came to defend their position, so we knew this one would be good.

Notes: One, two and three was very close at the top. Gulf Knights were 1.3 over HOPB and .8 over Pentium in visual. However HOPB was 1.3 over Gulf Knights and .35 over Pentium in Music. The final answer was GE where HOPB had a solid lead over both corps.

Finally the day ended in Denver with a battle at the top with the #1 corps in the country taking on a previous #1 in Kanpeki-sa.

Nastalgia and Kanpeki-sa came into the weekend as strong favorites, but it was the Knights, Unspecified and Castells that flexed their muscles on Saturday preview shows.

And there we have it, the results from the biggest show of the season thus far. The Knights won with what ended up being a very strong showing in visual, a solid score in GE, but just a mid-level music score. They didn't really have a weak category, though both visual and music analysis were their weakest. Nastalgia nearly pulled off a win by having that same solid GE score, but stronger in music than visual where they had one of the weakest categories in the field. Castells who got bronze, edged out the other 2 in GE, but split the difference in visual falling behind both in music. Like Knights, it was visual and music analysis where they were the weakest. Lets not forget Unspecified who was barely edged out of the medal race and certainly still in it. They did so with tie in GE with Continuum who was in 5th and moderate results in visual and music. Unlike many of the others, they actually stood out in visual and music analysis, taking the second. Continuum was the last corps to break 88. GE continues to haunt a few of the strongest performing corps of the season, including Indiana Royals and Spirit of the Raiders who had some of the lowest GE scores, but were very strong in music, Royals taking brass, percussion and music and Spirit getting 2nd in visual.

We now look east to the big show next Sunday in Atlanta with stops along the way next Saturday. Several corps are moving to Orlando, while others will move to Murfreesboro and Charlotte! Here is the schedule for next Saturday:

Notes:

Man did we have another nail biter top to bottom! Less than 3 points separate 1st to 16th! Many along the way were 100ths of points apart with one tie. The GE2 judge continued to ruin the hopes of Dark Knights, Spirit of the Raiders and Indiana Royals even as they posted impressive Brass, Percussion and Music scores! However, Indiana Royals were the ones most positioned to overcome that GE deficit, 1st corps breaking 90 and getting to 5th place winning Guard, Percussion and Music. The top 4 corps didn't win a single caption (outside of Guard and GE tie) and instead relied on a balanced approach with strong GE, and mid level scores (mostly) in music and fairly strong scores in visuals. About 1 point separates the top 5. In the top 4, all but Unspecified had strong Guard scores and Knights had the strongest visual score, with Unspecified just behind them. Unspecified nearly caught them with a strong Visual Analysis score. Brass and Percussion were also tied other than Unspecified. Unspecified made up for that in the Music Analysis caption. Overall, The Knights and Unspecified continued to show their historical prowess for the activity as they topped the leaderboard. These 2 will continue to battle as we go into the final 2 weeks of FMA Live, but we definitely have a list of corps who could be fighting for the top, especially as corps make their final push changes!

So there we have it from the first night of Allentown. Half the FMA Live corps went tonight and half tomorrow. We had 4 of the 5 corps breaking 90 last weekend going tonight and the number one seed The Knights remained strong taking the show tonight just edging out #3 Nastalgia. They were neck and neck so much through the captions, tying GE, Color Guard, Brass and Percussion so it came down to music analysis that Nastalgia took handley (coming in 2nd overall in the category) and Knights coming back strong visual performance (winning the caption) and analysis. The battle for third was also very tight as 3-5 was only .575 and 3rd to 4th just .075!! Indiana Royals who were 5th in last week's rankings now 5th at the show continued to have a strength in overall music, but slipped a bit in percussion to Knights and Nasatalgia as well as brass to Black Gold. Categories they continuously have won. GE continued to be their weakness as they scored second to last. Castells who were nipping at the heels of Nastalgia last weekend at 4th dropped a bit further behind tonight. Solid overall average scores, the only areas they still work on is visual and music analysis. Black Gold definitely took advantage, moving up from their 7th place tie last week to jump to third. Great scores in visual analysis and brass (both of which they won) helped anchor the corps scores in moving up to the elite! The last group of 3 also had a tight battle where only .2 separated the group. Dark Knights had the 2nd highest music scores, but the lowest GE. Steelmen were the opposite, having solid GE scores but the lowest music scores especially hurt by music analysis. Si Feng split the difference being fairly balanced having the weakest scores in guard and music analysis. All these corps get a break tomorrow as they watch the show continue with their counterparts to see who can catch them going into finals week!

We don’t let a little rain bring us down!! Corps brought it in night 2 of Allentown. The #2 seed Unspecified really showed why they are at the top of the pack and put on a 1.325 spread with the next closest competitor Kanpeki-sa who had some early season wins and keeps hanging around to potentially play spoiler! Unspecified had a solid GE score and by far the highest visual score buoyed by visual analysis and color guard. On the music side also a solid music score taking music analysis. .275 separated 2nd from 6th which is truly insane! The judges just could not decide who should be on top and they fought it out in the captions. Kanpeki-sa continues to hold their spot by having solid GE scores and pretty balanced visuals and music. Pentium who was near bottom last weekend bolted up to 3rd with very strong music scores. While they didn't win any of the music captions individually, their solid scores in each gave them the overall music win. Couldn't have been much closer to Continuum who they beat by .05. Continuum had the 2nd highest GE scores and won high brass to get 4th. Just behind them Heart of Palm Beach has the most beautiful show and truly a crowd favorite nailing the high GE score, but visual performance and somewhat guard really cripples them on the leaderboard. If they clean up these 2 in finals week, look out! Spirit of the Raiders saw some big GE jumps as we finish out the season, beyond that they are really pretty even and could climb. Gulf Knights who tied for guard and Queen Mutha finished out the groups.
