I'm going to take a shot at this reporter thing:
Today will be the last quiet day at the Championship venues. This fabled day off has always been a last sprint effort by the competing groups as they take these last few moments to perfect their productions before the bands begin to file in early tomorrow morning for prelims.
Today, we were with the Calgary Stetson Showband, a div. I marching band currently ending what has been a very strange season for them.
Midway through the season, director StampedeStetson decided to send the entirety of his staff from all 4 of his ensembles to a conference in Kerkrade, Netherlands to become better instructors. Being in the middle of the season, that left nobody here to run rehearsals.
Instead, Stetsons joined up with their sister ensembles, Canada Corps, Alberta X Winterguard, and Maple Leaf Percussion Ensemble to make a large, entertaining ensemble, performing at parades and festivals across Canada and the United States.
"We had over a week stretch where we had no rehearsals." said drum major Conner McDavid. "Many of our members were displeased with this break, angry that we may fall out of contention of a medal. However, when we learned what we would be doing for that week instead, we were very pleased. We learned several new songs with our friends in the other groups. The real highlight that pleases everyone, performer or the audience, is our rendition of the 1812 Overture. The percussion is very excited they get to fire cannons."
Director StampedeStetson said, "This mid-season break has been very successful. Our staff came back with much new knowledge and have already been applying it to our receptive members. The performances at festivals have really increased our influence, and we've already received interest from nearly 300 perspective members from across the globe. And finally, our members got to enjoy an experience no other groups in FMA have delivered.
Stetsons is currently ranked 5th and is expected to make finals on September 8th. They would like to invite everyone to McMahon Stadium in Calgary, AB on September 10th for their Home at Last Encore concert, featuring the Stetsons, Canada Corps, Alberta X, and Maple Leaf competitive shows in addition to the collective massed band festival set. This event is free and open to the public.
