Today’s PERC South Regional Championship at Philips Arena generated quite a buzz in the FMA drumline world. Renegade Percussion once again took the visual caption, but sliced through diddl.ez Percussion Ensemble’s lead in music and GE, leading to Renegade Percussion’s first league victory since season 57 (Philadelphia, week 4) and fourth league win ever. Not only does this victory put them in the PERC driver’s seat entering the final week of league competition, but it also thrusts them into fifth place in FMA Division 1 rankings. Additionally, this win just feels good. Renegade Percussion started the season in Dayton in 4th place, an alarming 7.895 points behind the winner. But last week, the group slid past XYZ-IW in Los Angeles, then defending champion Euphony Thunder in Omaha, setting them in a position to challenge diddl.ez in Atlanta, a mere 45 minutes from Renegade Percussion’s hometown of Newnan, Georgia. The group, while being a charter member of PERC’s predecessor PEARL, has not truly contended for a league championship in their history. Could season 67 yield them their first? Or will diddl.ez Percussion Ensemble strike back in Boston? Maybe Euphony Thunder, another Atlanta group, will defend their title? The battle for 1st is heating up!
In Division 2, second-year group Hartford Vanguard expanded their lead over Avalanche Indoor to about 3.4 points. Hartford, coming off a rookie campaign that yielded a league D3 championship and an FMA D3 4th place finish, sits 7th in the FMA rankings. While Avalanche Indoor started the season strong with a division win in Dayton, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Wichita, the group has remained rather stagnant since then, and has fallen to just outside of finals.
PERC’s sole Division 3 participant this season, Summit Drumline, debuted in Los Angeles last week and has already entered the top 10 for Division 3, currently holding on to a 9th place ranking.
PERC is starting to heat up as we head to Boston. We’ll see you at the Gahden!
