Many Leagues have been opened and have folded in the past, but this season's unusual spike in activity saw many new groups formed and prompted one director to create a league that is not of the typical sort.
Michael O'Leary, director of the Royal Spades Drum and Bugle corps along with several other ensembles around the Minnesota area said he felt under represented after having just recently joined a new drumline league. "It's so easy to get buried in competition," O'Leary said "It seems that the newer generations of corps, drumlines, and bands have been looked over and ignored, and it's difficult to build alliances when there are either extremely large or mostly dormant leagues."
O'Leary decided to scrape some money together, and start the Royal Kingdom Percussion League. A league that accepts newer and less experienced groups and allows them to compete and make alliances. O'Leary asked a few of his fellow Minnesota drumlines to join him in his quest to create a newer and more unique group. When asked what O'Leary hoped to accomplish with this new group O'Leary smiled and and politely responded with this. "We seek to add a new sense of dignity and respect to the world of the marching arts. We hold every group of our league to an extremely high standard. Not in the sense of performance or scores, but in a sense of professionalism. The Royal Kingdom's members should reflect the name with the utmost of dignity, courtesy, class, and respect. That is how we distinguish ourselves from others. And that is how we treat ourselves and how we treat others. Young or old, rookie or vet, Win or lose, we will remain dignified and respectful and will treat every group with the courtesy that they deserve."
Michael O'Leary also stated that he planned on creating leagues for drum corps, color guard, and marching band by the beginning of season 39.
