It has been another successful season for the Lexington Legends, and a fifth place finish is looking pretty solid at the moment barring something highly unusual. We are proud of our group for the best season in Lexington Legends history. But after five straight seasons in the top twelve (including two fifth place finishes acting as bookends), the Lexington Legends want more: a medal.
That being said, we are pleased to announce our Season 24 production. It is based on the greatest of all Greek myths, and will be called "Orpheus". This show will tell an adapted story of the Greek legend who charmed the Earth with his music. The musical selections will include -
Death and Transfiguration - Richard Strauss
Symphony No. 6 (Mvt. 1) - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
Moonlight Sonata (Mvt. 1) - Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 2 (Mvt. 5) - Gustav Mahler
When I am laid in earth/With drooping wings - Henry Purcell
Our story begins on the day of Orpheus' wedding day. The show begins serenely, as Orpheus prepares to marry his Euridice (Death and Transfiguration). As Euridice arrives at the altar, a serpent bites and kills her. Distraught, Orpheus decides to go to the Underworld to bargain with Pluto for her release .
Pluto agrees to release Euridice on one condition: Orpheus must not look back (Tchaikovsky Symphony).
Orpheus agrees, and makes his way from the Underworld with Euridice (Moonlight Sonata). However, as they go on, he begins to grow doubtful, and looks back (Mahler Symphony drumroll sequence). Euridice is taken from him once more, and Orpheus again becomes distraught.
Orpheus begins to sing one last song (When I am laid in Earth), and kills himself. The Muses (color guard) find his body, and build a shrine at his resting place (With drooping wings). As they place his lyre on the shrine, the corps gradually kneel for Orpheus and the music fades to nothing.
