Mike Alexander, corps director of the Lexington Legends Drum and Bugle Corps, held a press conference today. This is the transcript of his announcement.
"Thank you all for coming. This season has been a tremendous success. We were hoping to pick up our first ever Division 1 Medal, but a probable top six finish is no laughing matter. Could not possibly be more proud of the kids and the staff. However, we believe that if you aren't moving forward you are moving backward. I hate putting a hard number on performance because that isn't the point, but it is our intention to produce a medalist season. To do that we will all need to keep working hard, and also continue upping the quality of our shows. Next season will be a first in our organization's history, because we will
actually have a prop on the field. There will be a sun in the top left corner of the field. This may not be the most attention grabbing thing ever, it is a huge departure from our past and something we intend on building upon for the future."
"Anyway, um, the show for Season 19 will be called "Icarus and Daedalus" and will deal with the Greek story of those characters. We are very excited about this show, because it is a huge departure from the kind of shows we have performed in the past. Instead of plain music depicting an idea, it will be programmatic and dramatic, with the intention of telling
a specific story - that of Daedalus and his son, Icarus. Now, it will not always be a completely faithful retelling of this story, it will be altered to fit the kind of idea we are trying to convey, which is about flying higher. Enough of this talk though, all you really care about is the music."
"The first movement of the show will feature Ryan George's piece, Firefly. At the beginning of the show we will see Daedalus watching birds in flight, which gives him the inspration to create the wings. The second movement will feature the Flower Duet, by Leo Delibes. In this music we will depict Daedalus making the wings, and talking with his son, giving the fateful warning not to fly too close to the sun. The finale will be bitersweet in feel, as opposed to tragic. The music will be Kingfishers Catch Fire, by John Mackey. In this movement Icarus and Daedalus will don their wings, and fly off into a glorious sunset."
"That's all for now, I'll say more stuff as the season progresses. Good luck to all corps in Finals Week!"
